Vivid Living Colour's 1988 debut Vivid announced a New York quartet of Black musicians determined to reclaim hard rock as their own turf, fusing metal riffs with funk grooves, jazz chops, and pointed social commentary. Guitarist Vernon Reid's dazzling playing anchors the record, but its calling card was "Cult of Personality," a searing critique of demagoguery built around samples of historical speeches, which won the band a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance and heavy MTV rotation. An early champion of the group reportedly lent a hand producing part of the record, which helped break down genre barriers in rock radio. Received from Alliance Entertainment
